Movies Seen

The Golden Compass:: A movie that many young girls and even a few boys will delight in seeing. The story is well told. However, something seemed to be missing--a magical quality perhaps? I can't really place my finger on it. I would not recommend this movie for very young children or those who are easily prone to nightmares, since some of the animal souls of the people in this world do attack other animal souls quite violently. If your child cannot deal with even a slight cat fight among the neighborhood critters, you might want to view the movie without him/her first or hide their little eyes and cover their ears during those few parts. I have a niece who at 14 might not be able to handle those small bits of violence in the movie. Her brother and sister wouldn't think twice about them.

Enchanted:: Cute. Very cute. The princesses in your life will love it. So will the adults with a romantic twist to their heart. You must be prepared to put reality aside and just go with the flow or the magic will be lost. A good, but subtle, lesson of learning to take your fate in your own hands rather than willing letting others take the reins and simply following or doing as you are told.

Beowolf:: Excellent 3D animation. The depictions of the characters are amazingly life like. There is still a bit lacking in the movement of the eyes and the facial expressions--emotions do not come through as well as they would on a real person. The voice actors do the best they can to make up for this lack with the inflections in their voices. The story, well, it's a version of Beowolf. What more can I say.

Fred Claus::An ok movie, and an entertaining distraction for one viewing. The one thing that kept the movie going and made it not just a Christmas movie or another movie about Santa and his family, was the ongoing relationship between the two brothers, and the fact that though misunderstood, they truly cared for each other and in the end resolved their differences.

Mr. Magoriums Wonder Emporium:: Another cute movie with a hidden lesson. What I saw of it I liked. Ok, I fell asleep in it twice, but my roommate loved it. Based on what I saw, my nieces and nephews would love it too.

Dan In Real Life:: Was pretty much that--the story of a man who has allowed his life to stop except for caring for his children, after the death of his spouse. He's even given up his music--something that no one should ever due regardless of their ability. Music is an expression of your soul and a healer of wounds. And, Dan, it turns out is quite talented. It is the story of a man falling in love and slowly coming back to life one winter holiday season, much to the joy of his family. While it gets off to a slow start, it is definitely worthy of a watch.

My new favourite drink

Well, anyone who has read this blog, even just a little, has probably noted at one time or another that the only hot drinks that I am partial to are hot chocolate and mint tea (unsweetened). Ok, I sort of like hot mulled cider too, but not the Starbuck's stuff. It's too sweet, and they don't use mulling spices. They use a sugar based cinnamon flavour syrup.

Anyway, I recently went back on my diet. I still have a few pounds to shed. And, well, drinking only mint tea or water can get a little boring. Since I avoid caffeine like the plague, to use a cliche, I tend to search for herbal teas that have some kick to them or enough natural sweetness to satisfy that sweet tooth of mine. It's rare that I find an herbal tea that I like, however, I am adding Celestial Season's Spiced Sugar Plum to my list. Not only does it taste great, but it smells wonderful. And, at least to me, it is sweet. The only drawback is that it is seasonal. So, I just may have to pick up a few extra boxes to get me through the rest of the year.

Now, if only I could find a chocolate tea that doesn't contain caffeine or peanuts and doesn't need sweetening. Chocolate, chocolate mint, chocolate hazelnut, chocolate whatever..., I'm willing to try it.

Yes, I know, I could use artificial sweeteners to give the mint tea a bit of a change in flavour, and maybe make some of the other herbals I've tried so far palatable, but, guess what? Yep, I've never been a fan of artificial sweeteners--well, excluding a short stint a few years back when nutrasweet first came out. That use was caused by a health issue that has since improved.

I'm open to suggestions for possible drinks, hot or cold, to add to my very short list.
